Facts about Earth- Some More From the History

1. Earth is the Fifth Largest Planet. The diameter of the Earth at the equator is about 7926 Miles. Earth is not a perfect sphere but is slightly flattened at the poles, the diameter of the Earth measured around North Pole and the South Pole is about 7899 Miles.




2. Earth has four distinct seasons. This is an outcome of Earth’s axis of rotation being tilted more than 23 Degrees. Seasons changes as the tilt of the Earth’s axis changes during its revolution around the Sun.




3. Earth is the only planet to harbor life as it has an atmosphere that sustains life. Its atmosphere is 76% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen with traces of Argon, Carbon dioxide and water. The atmosphere affects Earth’s long term climate and short term local weather as well as shield us from nearly all harmful radiations coming from the Sun. It also protects from meteors as well as they mostly burn up before they strike the surface of the Earth.




4. Earthquakes can be catastrophically destructive and deadly. It is estimated that Earth releases about 1 million shifts in a year and almost most of them are not even registered.

Facts about Earth- Space Above in the History

1. Earth was the centre of the Universe in the early philosophy. However it was figured out in the 3rd century to measure the distance to the Sun and the Moon and was concluded that the Earth orbited the sun later to correct by Nicolaus Copernicus in 1543.




2. Earth has only one Natural Satellite which is called the ‘Moon’. Luna (Moon) orbits at a distance of 384,000 km with a radius of 1738 km and a mass of 7.32 e22 kg. There are thousands of small artificial satellites which have been placed in orbit around the Earth. Because of its size and composition, it is also called a Terrestrial Planet along with Mercury, Venus, earth and Venus.




3. Earth is the third planet from the Sun. Its average distance from the Sun is around 149,597,890 km or one astronomical unit (AU). Located between Venus and Mars, some people even call it ‘Third rock from the Sun’.




4. Experts around the world claim that roughly around 1000 tons of Space Debris rains down in a year and it is increasing with every year.

1. Peter Gardner Ostrum, a native of Cleveland, played an important role as a child actor (Charlie Bucket) in Mel Stuart’s ’Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory’ in 1971  and was offered a three-movie contract but he turned it down . He never acted again and is now a Veterinarian in rural New York.




2. The First Hollywood Stunt Man was ex-U.S. cavalary Frank Hanaway who was first cast in ‘The Great Train Robbery’ in 1903 for his ability to fall off a horse without hurting himself.

1.  The First Auto company that introduced the Hand Brake, located on driver’s left was Packard Motor Car Company of Detroit, Michigan in 1914.




2. The First Car with an actual Air Conditioning system was 1940 model Packard by Packard Motor Car Company of Detroit, Michigan.




3. The First Rear-View Mirrors were invented by an Engineer and a Car maker, named Ray Harroun. The invention took place right before his Indianapolis 500 race on May 30, 1911. However Elmer C.A.Berger, an inventor is credited for the invention in the early 1900s.




4. The First Anti Brake System (ABS) or Anti-lock Brake System was invented by the French automotive and Aircraft pioneer, Gabriel Voisin. Around 1970’s Chrysler Corporation inducted the system.

Facts about Earth- Down In The History

1. Earth is the only Planet in our solar system with Plate Tectonics. Without the presence of these plates the carbon content would not be consumed or recycled and earth would burn as a whole due to over-heating.




2. The temperature of the Earth’s core is as hot as the surface of the sun. The temperature would be around 5500’C or 9900’F.




3. Earth is almost Five billion years old although life has only existed on the planet for around 150 to 200 million years (5-10) % of Earth’s lifetime.




4. The duration of time it takes to orbit around the Sun is 365 and a quarter days. To make up this extra quarter which isn’t counted at the end of a year, we have an extra day every Four years on 29th February and the said year is called the Leap year.
