1. The
huge ‘HOLLYWOOD’ sign was erected in
1923 and originally was spelt as ‘HOLLYWOODLAND’.
2. The
letters of the word ‘HOLLYWOODLAND’
were originally 50-ft high of which four letters (‘LAND’) were removed in 1949. Now it is spelled out in
45ft-tall (14m) white capital letters and is 350 ft (110) long as ‘HOLLYWOOD’.
3. The Hollywood sign was given its landmark status
by the Cultural Heritage Board in 1973.
It was then declared Los Angeles
Cultural-Historical Monument #111.
4. The sign Hollywood was designed by an artist Thomas Fisk Goff in the early 1920’s.
5. Broadway actress Peg
Entwistle committed suicide by jumping off the letter “H” of HOLLYWOOD in September 1932
at the age of 24.
